Prófessor David Labaree heldur fyrirlestur sem hann nefnir Rags to Riches: How the American College Went from Pitiful in the 19th Century to Powerful in the 20th. Sjá um Labaree https://ed.stanford.edu/faculty/dlabaree

Á síðasta ári kom út bók Labaree “A Perfect Mess: The Unlikely Ascendancy of American Higher Education“. Sjá https://www.press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/P/bo19995111.html  Þar ræðir hann þróun háskólastigsins í Bandaríkjunum og hvernig megi skilgreina það og hvað hefur ráðið þróun þess. Í síðasta kaflanum sem hann kallar einmitt “A perfect mess” setur hann m.a. fram hugleiðingar sínar um hvað skipti máli við stjórnun bæði einstakra skóla og stigsins í heild þegar horft er til þessarar bandarísku sögu.

Bókin er m.a. áhugaverð í ljósi ólíkra hugmynda um hvernig eigi að hafa stjórn á þessu ólíkindatóli – háskóla, einkum í ljósi þess hvernig það varð til og náði þeirri stöðu sem háskólar hafa, raunar  um allan heim. Hann segir m.a. „The American system of higher education is enormously productive and useful, and it‘s a great resource for students, faculty, policy makers, employers, and society. What makes it work is not its substance but its form. The form makes no sense to outsiders but it‘s enormously effective. So we need to avoid the urge to remake it in a more rationalized form“ og undir lokin ávarpar hann velmeinandi umbótasinna eftir að hafa rakið fjölda hugmynda til umbóta sem flestar eru velþekktar og virðast skynsamlegar og spyr „Why ruin a perfect mess?“ Það er sennilega styrkur háskóla að hvorki um þetta né eiginlega nokkuð annað sem snýr að skipulagi háskóla er samhljómur innan þeirra. En sjáum til.

The American system of higher education is enormously productive and useful, and it‘s a great resource for students, faculty, policy makers, employers, and society. What makes it work is not its substance but its form. The form makes no sense to outsiders but it‘s enormously effective. So we need to avoid the urge to remake it in a more rationalized form. Why ruin a perfect mess?

Monday February 11th, David Labarre, professor at Stanford Graduate School of Education, will give a talk about the subject and ask „Why ruin a perfect mess?“ Professor Labaree is the author of A Perfect Mess: The Unlikely Ascendancy of American Higher Education, published 2018.
